MADRID, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The celebrations began in Barcelona almost as soon as the referee blew the final whistle to confirm FC Barcelona as European Champions following their 3-1 win in the final of the Champions League against Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday.
Goals from Pedro Rodriguez, Leo Messi and David Villa gave Barcelona the fourth European Cup in their history and the third in the last five years to confirm them as the best team on the continent.
35,000 Barcelona fans, who were unable to make the trip at Wembley, watched the game on a giant screen mounted next to the city's Arc de Triumph and began celebrating as soon as the game ended.
Meanwhile thousands more began to congregate at the traditional meeting point for Barca fans, the Fuente de Caneletas at the top of the famous Las Ramblas.
The press wasted no time in praising the achievements of the side coached by Pep Guardiola. Barcelona based Diario Sport headlined its website in English, saying "Barca, Champions," adding that "the best Barcelona in history once again reigned at Wembley, Barcelona saw its legend grow even greater, winning their fourth final in a memorable game."
Another Barcelona paper el Mundo Deportivo was no less fulsome in its praise. "Barcelona win its fourth Champions League title, dominating Manchester United from start to finish," "Pedro, Leo Messi and Villa who else were those in charge of ensuring Barcelona's dominance was reflected in the scoreline," wrote the paper.
Even the pro-Real Madrid papers, Marca and Diario AS had no option other than to bow down to Barcelona's magnificent display.
"A Barcelona for dreams," headlined the website of Marca, which also highlighted the performance of Leo Messi, who was voted man of the match at Wembley, as well as Pedro, who they describe as "a specialist in finals."
AS meanwhile was slightly dryer in its reporting of Barcelona's triumph, writing "FC Barcelona won their fourth Champions League title in Wembley after defeating Manchester United in a great game. "
Barcelona will share the Champions League trophy with their fans with a street parade in the streets of the city, followed by a fireworks display in the Camp Nou stadium on Sunday.
